Family Figments

A few years ago I inherited a family album from the early 1900’s. It contained images of my great and grand parents, my father and my aunt and their childhood friends, family pets and a variety of unknown relatives.  Who were these people?  I wondered about their personalities, pieced together a few known facts, and conjured up their lives.  Then I started to make collages.

Each of these collages is an adventure - an intuitive process that often takes on a life of its own - a conversation with the past and with myself, something invented. Many are populated with birds, animals, or nature, not unlike the fairy tale graphics of my childhood books.   Some include celestial or navigational references, to aid in flights of the imagination.

I consider each as an illustration for my own book of family history and myths - allowing me to honor and respect my predecessors in a very personal way.  And each image is an invitation to you to enter an imaginary world, populated by those ancestors.
